Aura of Protection (allies near you add your Charisma to saves) is the Paladin's defining gift to a party.
Your oath is your path (features at 3, 7, 15, 20).
Channel Divinity Sacred Weapon and Turn the Unholy, then Aura of Devotion (immune to charm), Purity of Spirit, and Holy Nimbus.
An oath is a list of things you said you would not do, and the world keeps the list. Break one and your aura narrows. Break two and it goes out. There is a rite to come back, and it costs coin, faith and a fortnight of behaving.
Other oaths exist in the world, including the Oath of Freedom, the Demonic Throne's "evil" oath whose creed is unbound liberty.
